Over the last couple of weeks, we have visited much of PEI in support of our Advocating for Seniors project and expanding our impact across the province. Without building up trusted networks and contacts for recruiting advocates we cannot grow our program. For over 30 years, PEICA has matched ordinary citizens (advocates) in freely given relationships with intellectually disabled Islanders (protégés). All of our matches are made through trusted networks of people we know.As you can imagine, it can be challenging to make meaningful contacts in an area you don't reside in. We are seeking volunteers from every corner of PEI who would be willing to act as "Connectors" and introduce us to potential advocates. Connectors are active in their community and have a wide network of friends and contacts – a people person. PEICA makes a modest number of matches each year. We find the protégé first, then seek out the right advocate for that person. We may not have a protégé seeking an advocate in your area for quite sometime but we'd still like to stay in touch. Our Connectors would be willing to serve on an "as needed" basis. If you would like to become a Connector or learn more about Citizen Advocacy in general please call 902.566.3523. ...
